Gold Country

Region in which the gold fever began in 1849 and once and for all changed the history of the state. In the skirts of the Sierra Nevada, Gold Country is full of mining towns, whereas Sacrament -the State Capital-, is recognized as a sophisticated city full of theatres, art galleries and museums between which still appears vestiges of this pioneering past. In the downtown is the State Capitol, a Renaissance style building copy of the national Capitol in Washington DC, and that lodges the State Legislature since 1869.

There’s a permanent exhibition with vestiges of more than 100 native tribes in the State Indian Museum. The city also has its own ballet, opera and theatre companies, as well as a vibrant nightlife full with nightclubs, bars, comedy clubs and restaurants of all type of ethnic food.

The El Dorado county is the heart of the Gold Country, and where James Marshall discovered the first gold vein in Stutter´s Mill. The visitors can experience the gold search in the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, besides to visit the historical museum or buildings and the only mine in active-duty opened to the public in Placerville.
