San
Diego County
The warm weather and the beautiful beaches makes of San
Diego a destiny much appreciated for the holidays. The
Spanish inheritance is very present in the city in its
architecture and its museums. The main attractions are
the San Diego Zoo, the Sea World and the San Diego Wild
Animal Park. The city is a cultural centre, with good
museums and historical sites. There are several Spanish
missions and in addition it’s the 18th century Cabrillo
National Monument, that commemorates the disembark of
the Spanish discoverers in 1542.
The historical district of the city is the Gaslamp Quarter,
a 16 blocks area full of businesses, galleries, coffees,
restaurants and theatre spaces, that can be crossed on
foot, in a float of horses or in old T Ford. Another inescapable
visit is the Balboa Park, an extensive green space that
lodges 14 museums, as well as art galleries, artistic
centres and the famous San Diego Zoo.
In the city outskirts is Villa Coronado, in a peninsula
that is united to the continent through a thin sand line
known as Silver Strand. Here is the eccentric Coronado
Hotel, full of torteas, high cupolas and handmade carved
wood pillars. In Point Hill it’s possible to enjoy
a magnificent panoramic view of San Diego and the bay,
as well as to observe the annual migration of the California
gray whales.
In Mission Valley is the Mision Basilica San Diego de
Alcala, founded on 1769 by Father Junipero Serra. Next
to the Prison -and the town that originated from these
buildings- was the first Spanish outpost in the High California,
and place of origin of the present city of San Diego.
Sea World is located in the Mission Bay Park, as well
as the 792 frightening meters of the Giant Dipper rollercoaster.
